Print me a Liver

Technology is great! Decades ago, the problem was how to transfer an organ such as a liver or a kidney to another body. Then that problem was solved and the new problem was where to find a donor as well as donor-recipient compatibility issues. Now, it will be a whole different ball game.

Invetech has delivered what it calls the “world’s first production model 3D bio-printer” to Organovo, developers of the proprietary NovoGen bioprinting technology. Organovo will in turn supply the devices to institutions investigating human tissue repair and organ replacement.

Tissues and organs can now be printed using your own cells – this solves both the donor and compatibility issues. But will it work? Like all young technology, there might be failures but I sure think it will be the norm in a few years from now.
