I was always fascinated with lightnings ever since I was a child. I remember doing this simple experiment which allows me to create my very own little version of a lightning using simple things around the house.

What I’ll do now is share with you this amazing experience which you can try for yourself or with your kids if you have. It’s pretty simple and is perfectly safe.

WHAT YOU NEED:

• aluminum pie pan
• small piece of wool fabric
• styrofoam plate
• pencil with a new eraser
• thumbtack

WHAT TO DO:

1. Push the thumbtack through the center of the aluminum pie pan from the bottom
2. Push the eraser end of the pencil into the thumbtack.
3. Put the styrofoam plate upside-down on a table. Quickly, rub the underneath of the plate with the wool for a couple of minutes.
4. Pick up the aluminum pie pan using the pencil as a handle and place it on top of the upside-down styrofoam plate that you were just rubbing with the wool.
5. Touch the aluminum pie pan with your finger. You should feel a shock. If you don’t feel anything, try rubbing the styrofoam plate again.
6. Once you feel the shock, try turning the lights out before you touch the pan again. Check out what you see! You should see a spark!!

WHAT HAPPENED:

Why does this happen? It’s all about static electricity. Lightning happens when the negative charges, which are called electrons, in the bottom of the cloud or in this experiment your finger are attracted to the positive charges, which are called protons, in the ground or in this experiment the aluminum pie pan. The resulting spark is like a mini lightning bolt.

I have no idea what cystitis is until my friend Grace told me about it. She told me about it because she was suffering from it and boy I could hardly imagine the pain that she has to go through. What bothered me most was when she told me that women or highly susceptible to this disease. Why was I bothered? I’m male so why should I be bothered at all? I was bothered because my family is mostly women - my mom, three aunts, my wife, and my two daughters.

A lunar eclipse is something that is not passed-up by weirdos like me. Ok, I’m not really a weirdo but many people call me so because I love going out at night upto early dawn just to look up the sky and take a look at the stars, the moon, the planets, comets, and meteors.

It’s 11:11pm here in the Philippines (+8GMT) and I’m still waiting for the partial lunar eclipse which is to occur at about 3 hours from now.  So I guess I just have to think of ways to keep myself alive, alert, awake, and enthusiastic. :D  Also, I do hope that the weather cooperates.

A few days ago, Kiel’s father asked me if I could lecture a group of 1st year and 4th year students about the solar system and so I thought that this would be a good opportunity to tell them that we no longer have 9 planets in the Solar System. So I got myself into creating a short presentation to help these kids understand what the Solar System is all about.
